As it’s the start of term, we thought it would be a nice idea to introduce you cyclists here at QMUL to our upcoming events and let you know about some important cycling info! So, whether you’re staff, a new student or have been here for 3 years already, hopefully this information will be of use.
Free cycle maintenance
We have organised 18 completely free cycle maintenance sessions for this academic year spreading across the 3 main campuses. The poster below shows the dates of all of these sessions.
We never take bookings for the Mile End sessions, these always work on a first come first served basis. We do take bookings for both Mile End and Whitechapel so keep an eye out on Twitter @QMSustTravel and @QMSustain nearer the time to book onto these. There is space for some walk-ins at these sessions so if you don’t get a chance to book, it’s worth coming along anyway just in case!
Free cycle training
If you’ve recently moved to London, or just don’t feel totally comfortable riding your bike through the capital yet, you can get free cycle training through Tower Hamlets Council. You can do the training on your own, or in a pair if you’d prefer, and is applicable for complete beginners through to experienced cyclists. You can even borrow a bike if you don’t have your own yet!
You can find out more and book your training session here.
Keeping your bike safe
If you don’t yet have a good quality lock for your bike, then you’ve come to the right place! As a student/staff member at QMUL, you can get 10% off locks at Bikeworks, who are located nearby on Cambridge Heath Road.
If you don’t make it to the store, we do have bike lock sales on campus from time to time, so keep an eye out on social media for more information.
Immobilise also have some really great information on keeping your bike safe on their website so make sure you check that out too.
We work with the police and get them on site to mark bikes regularly. This year we have also been able to book bike marking at Charterhouse Square for the first time! Bike marking helps police and retailers identify the legitimate owner of bikes that have been stolen or resold.
We’ve got 8 bike marking sessions booked in for the year, 4 at Mile End (22nd Sept 16, 17th Jan 17, 14th March 17, 4th May 17) and 4 at Charterhouse Square (13th Oct 16, 31st Jan 17, 13th March 17, 2nd May 17).
As always, keep an eye out on Twitter for more information nearer the time!
We work with a charity called Recycle Your Cycle who set up bicycle repair workshops within the prison service to assist in the rehabilitation of prisoners. These workshops provide technical and work skills for the prison students which will hopefully assist with their employment prospects. The resale of refurbished bicycles in turn supports numerous worthwhile causes.
The bikes start from just £4o and the next bike sale will be on the 4th May as part of Bike Week.
It seems like a long way away now, but Bike Week this year will be on the 2nd to the 5th May 2017.
Like last year we’ll have events at all three main campuses, including bike maintenance, cycle training and cycle marking.
