5 tips to help you stay healthy and green…

We all know we could make an effort to walk a bit more or cycle somewhere instead of jumping on the tube or bus and there are countless articles online that show just how important it is to keep active. We’ve put together 5 tips to help you keep active and start the New Year in the healthiest (and most sustainable) way possible…

1. Make small changes

There are a number of little changes you can make to help get you moving that little bit more each day. You can get off a stop early on your way home to incorporate more walking into your daily routine and, if you get the tube, it could save you some cash too! You could also take the stairs instead of the lift, or go to a toilet slightly further away than usual (if you’re not too desperate)!

2. Get cycling!

You don’t own a bike? Don’t worry, there are a number of Santander Cycle docking stations nearby so have a look online for your nearest one. Why not go on a cycle along the canal this weekend?

3. Start running

Running isn’t for everyone and if you’re not interested just skip this one but, if you are, a really great place to start is Couch to 5k. It’s really easy to start with short intervals of running and walking, gradually building up to a 5k, they even have podcasts and tell you when to start and stop running and walking. Take a look at Queen Mary runners if you’d prefer to run as part of a group!

4. Go on a walk at lunch time

It’s much easier and warmer to stay inside but going on a quick walk at lunchtime can really help to make you feel more refreshed and it’s a great way to get away from your desk and computer screen for a little bit. Time to start exploring the canal!

5. Don’t forget QMotion!

There is a gym on campus and there is a wide range of classes on offer with student and staff discounts. With classes all day, you really now have no excuse!
